Hi,
Friended you on FB recently and thank you for being one of my recently added. I will say again that I found you after burning man last year for who knows what reason and subscribed on You Tube. So, I’ve been seeing you ever since in one way or another. Thanks for being there and thanks for doing the work of an angel…..maybe you are an angel.
Anyway, I have had a particularly difficult life the last couple of years….my son died by suicide from the Golden Gate Bridge. I sent you my blog address (hopelessly outdated) and underpopulated….I’ll get back to it soon. Seems I’m just coming out of the fog of unbelieveable pain and grief. But check out the blog sometime. The basics of this sad story are there and some other stuff undone and waiting for me to come back.
I’m rambling…I do that. So, the reason I was writing is I just thought of something and maybe you already thought of it or are doing it. This is the first time I’ve been to your website and imagine in all the years you have been doing this, you’ve had lots of ideas.
Here it is. I have been at home needing a hug a lot this year. I do get hugs and so many people have been there for me in the past year and a half and I have a wife and life partner who is so incredible that words don’t apply. But ya know, there’s no such thing as as extra hug.
Ok, I’ll get to the point. Anonymous Hugs across the miles arranged by a family or friends that sends the hugger to someone’s house….someone who just needs a hug. All free, and of course there would be some details to work out. So, it would go like this (and it would take some time to build up a network of safe and sincere huggers), I know some in Seattle who is having a hard time or maybe I just want them to have a hug, so, kinda like couch surfing, the is a network of huggers. These people would be my surrogate huggers. Some huggees might need a heads up that something was coming or not. This way I could hug my mom whenever I wanted. I know there might be some issues with this, but I’m going to do this somehow in the next few weeks. I’ll let you know how it goes.
peace, love, and hugs, moonfire

John,

I have been totally fascinated with the idea of going to burning man since I heard about it in 2004. From the Art, creativity, culture, to the abstract reality that I have seen over and over again with each new video i watch.

I live in the Midwest and a trip that far is kind of a big deal, especially going it alone since most of the people I know are, well, lets just say close minded to the idea of taking the journey.

So I guess what I’m trying to say is, are there many people that hit Burning man by themselves, and if so, do you have any tips for the loner and slightly introverted.

Thanks for your time,

Lukas

Hi Lukas! Have you looked into Regional Burning Man groups near you? It is certainly not necessary. But could make things easier and more fun to find local people to share packing, rides, etc. with.

Many people come by themselves. To me it feels like a family – even with people I’ve never met. So you are never “alone” there.

Will my gravatar.com work, now?

Hi John,

I found you by watching the Burning Man videos on You Tube and have been following you via your Hug Nation sessions, website and You Tube spots. I imagine you must get this a lot…but you are my hero in so many ways…a true leader and voice of love, happiness and positive thinking.
I am attending my first Burning Man adventure this the year of Metropolis. My nephew Ben and myself will be heading out of St. Louis in his vintage motor home and we’re even building an art car out of an electric golf cart! So excited in so many ways.
I would so love to meet you, shake your hand, hug you and share in our mutual energies!
I have a question for you based on utilizing photos and videos taken at Burning Man. You of all people would know the mechanics of this. Both my nephew and I are photographers and we’d like to organize a book of our adventures at Burning Man, but also need to go about this the right way. Do we need permission to do this? Is there someone that can answer questions or perhaps a website or material we can read?
I look forward to hearing from you and I very much look forward to experiencing your energy in person at Burning Man. I hope we get to connect here or there. Peace and Love and enveloping hugs, Take good care,
Mark Groaning

So glad my excessive uploads resonate with you!   I look forward to a dusty hug.   PLEASE make sure to look for Pink Heart Camp.    re: Photo Book: Burning Man has strict rules about commercial use of photos and pics. You will need to get your cameras tagged when you enter the event. Here are there photo guides: http://www.burningman.com/press/photo_guide.html.   SOme other things to keep in mind:  1) BM is harsh on equipment.  2) Don’t sacrafice the experience for a record of it.  It is a VERY tough balance at BM.  My suggestion:  Give yourself some “Photo safari” excursions.   At other times, allow yourself to watch and participate without having the “where’s my camera!?” instinct.  See you at Home. :)

I just wanted to send a quick word of thanks. I found out about HugNation through Burning Man and have watched many of the videos off of your youtube channel. You are truley an inspiring and beautiful person. While I may not regularly tune in to the weekly hug videos, on several occasions now (this being one of them) I’ll be feeling down about where I am in life versus where I want to be, but your videos always put a huge smile on my face and make me know everything will work out in the end.
Keep doing what you do :)

Serious weirdness…
I have been sporically following you online since you posted the parachuting story on Prehensile Tales. What was that – freakin’ 96?? Crazy long time ago. Used to send you texts through your site when you were working at CC and called into your show. Sent you a weepy message about the defunct Loinmeter. Lol
Ok. Rambling.
Here is my weird point. You are the one and only person I have ever conversed with in California. Which is not surprising since I live in deepest, darkest Northern Ontario, Canada.
And there are lots of people in California.
And when I got a consulting gig here, the first thought that crossed my mind was ‘wonder I will see Halcyon?’. Laughable, right?
I have been here for 5 days and about a half hour ago, you sat down on the grass about 20 feet away from me. Crazy.
I would have said hello, but you were otherwise…occupied. So, hello from me. :)

Wow! Craxy small world!!  welcome to CA!!  ((HUG))  hug you next time.

Buddy or Sunny...I have many names! July 15, 2010 at 3:13 am

Yo John,

I’m a “virgin” burner…so most of this is BM related…

I tried to go to triple w giftingit dot com and order your dvd and the site is under construction….it’d be cool to watch/order the dvd related to that website (when you get it finished)

Here’s a strange question, got any tips on taking a solar shower or just a pour it over yer head shower out on the playa? I don’t think wet naps will do it for me and I don’t have the dough to rent an RV…LOL…I’m just a starving artist who’ll be going this year (Finally! Yeah!) and I’ll barely have a tent. (Thanks BM org for the lower priced tier one ticket) My Burner friends said I can just use a gallon jug or two of water, (warmed by the sun) stand in a big-ish tub thing I bought at a yard sale (it’s big 2×2 feet square, deep and sturdy!) and in the privacy of my tent, it’s tall and I’m 6ft (or if I’m NOT feeling shy outside of my tent) and pour, lather up, then rinse…then (after I get dressed..haha) I can pour the grey water into 5 gallon jugs using a funnel and take it with me back to an acceptible place to dump it….probably one of the RV dump stations or a motel or home. Does this sound like a good (sane/do-able) plan? I feel strange asking you but perhaps you know a better way? BTW, this is how my low budget burner friends all do it, they use kiddie pools though….I got lucky and found the square thing. Maybe you can post something about low budget showering (on tips n tricks) that all we “low on dough” virgin burners can cope with easier!? That would be cool!

As far as the people who are from far away, (yes, John’s correct, you can go by yourself but if on a budget it can be intimidating) isn’t there a shuttle for them or do they need to rent a car at Reno airport…hmmm…I feel lucky I live so close….maybe rent a wreck in Reno?

Also, {{{{hugs}}}} to Moonfire who lost a son to suicide, I read something by Larry on burningman.com that might shed some light on why people feel so isolated….and sometimes commit suicide….I think it is the story about Larry’s life and how TV has isolated people of all ages….and why burningman doesn’t allow commericialism in. A family member of mine committed suicide last year but I am no expert, but perhaps that might be helpful….also going to buringman might be good for Monnfire and family since SF is so close…me and my clan will give you hugs Moonfire. We are located sort of along the way in North Tahoe and have several sweet spots to hang…a beach, a giant rock which hangs over the lake, a national forest with trails and all located next to my funky old 1973 half burned down a frame house (a 15 acre forest fire blasted a panoramic lake view in front of the house…scary but jaw dropping view, oh yeah) If anything Moonfire I can clue you in to secret places at Lake Tahoe…Moondune beach…very special and the Doors, Led Zeplin and many other rock stars have signed the guest book inside of that 1920’s classic Tahoe cabin…if the owner is hme they’ll let us inside, I know them! The beach is public, cabin is private…it’s interesting to know it was a rock star hang out back then. I’m also a private guide for Tahoe but no longer do it since I broke my back and a surgeon cut a nerve and caused permenant damage but I can show you Moondune Beach and explain in detail how to go about using to it’s fullest! It is warmer water than any other beach in all of Tahoe and there are too too many other special details to type here about the Moondune beach I’d be happy to share….John has my permission to pass along my email (You have my permission John)

Love yourself and then you can love others! {{{{HUGS}}}} from Buddy (Sunny in winter!) and my clan!

Thank You! I’ll see you at burningman and everyone else!

Showering:  My first couple years, I just put a 2.5 gallon of water on the roof of my car and used a washcloth.   But a kiddie pool is even better. Check out eplaya for evaporation poo. ideas.  The last few years our Evap pond didn;t really do teh job, so camp mates all brought jugs of greyater back with them. icky, but doable.

As far as shuttles, I think there is a Reno ride share board on ePlaya, too. (Eplaya is linked on BurningMan.com)

Looking forward to a dusty hug!
