Hi Elaine. This is Grandson John. I sent your comment to Susan, David, & The Twins. So wonderful to hear about Grandpa's impact on others. Love, John.

I don't know if anyone will see this comment at such a late date but I'll give it a shot. Dr. Shikles was my pastor at First Baptist in Denver in the '50's, when I was a teenager. His influence on me is profound. I don't think I even know all the ways. I hear some of his comments even yet fairly often in my head.

The biggest influence was his encouraging all us young women to go to college. If not for his encouragement, I don't think I would've gone. Needless to say, that decision gave me a completely different life than I would've had otherwise.

I looked up to him, took his example as worthy, and appreciated all the personal attention he gave me, an awkward young girl trying to find her way.

The Bible stories he told on Sunday mornings were the best Bible teachings I ever got and they stuck with me.

Hope David and Susan and the twins might see this and know how much your dad meant to this one person.

Am challenged by Calebs life of demonstrating such a powerful love to mankind.
Am thankful to God for his life and also sharing such information for the world to benefit.
Its my prayer i live by such an example of loving mankind against all odds.
AGAPE LOVE is what we need to overcome the world.
Truly love is the greatest of all gifts.

I knew Caleb as Dr. Shikles. He was the pastor of the church in which I grew up. He challenged me to think beyond the Grand Valley and Grand Junction, Colorado. So I went to Kalamazoo College in Michigan and I went to study at the University of Bonn and work in West Berlin in Germany. Then I came back to the US and studied at the Seminary in Berkeley, where he had studied. I became close to the family of one of his classmates in Seminary and I became active in the church in which his wife Carol had grown up. I now live in Long Beach, California and I work to train and equip Asylum Officers here in the US who determine who should be granted what was once called "political asylum." I regret that I did not reconnect with Caleb and his Hug Nation before he passed away, but I know that so much of my life was influenced by his. I hope that I can continue to do my best to bring wholeness/ life/ love/ peace-- HUGS to this world that needs it all so badly. Blessings on you for helping to build this incredible HUG NATION!

Ive been thinking of Grandpa Caleb all day, for some reason his words are resonating with me more than ever. Hes really a shining example of what I want from myself in my lifetime, I dont think Ive ever known someone in my life who always had such a positive attitude.
Take Care Grandpa Caleb and be sure to tell my grandfather that we love him and miss him as much as ever.

Ever the web surfer, I find myself meeting Caleb today. No accident. I feel blessed and encouraged to live my life with love manifesting itself in all my actions. All I want is to do good. First things first, I'm gonna go give my kids a hug they'll never forget.
